Except for the fact thats its getting really cold - cold enough that going out is a major chore....

hm..

I may start tinkering with js/java again. maybe. to kill time.

edit: I did start tinkering with java : if youre interested, see how i kill time by generating this.

ps: its not compiled.

CELS & CHEM 191

CHEM was okay-im-not-going-to-die-but-it-was-Not-Good.
CELS was better.

Had this really weird dream last night about Ping, waiting for exam to start, a pair of lionesses, a raging bull, and a wolf. Woke up trying to shove the wolf which somehow ended up sitting on me.

Pictionary with science students during exam period ends up.... like what u see below.
Pictionary

Highlight for answers:
(i)average
(ii)orphan

Yeah, we're slowly losing our minds.

One more exam to go.....

HUBS 191

HUBS exam yesterday - not gonna comment on it =D

But the most interesting thing was hearing this quote (word-for-word) : "Whats wrong with sleeping with my sister?"

in a totally innocent / bewildered tone, by one of the guys.

ps no, he was not talking incest
pps the electric thing : that was from a physics lecture... i havent actually touched a live wire. sheesh.

What I learnt today...

... if you want to grab a live wire or "test" whether theres current running through a wire or not, do it with the back of your hand.

That way, as soon as u get shocked, you break contact with the current by yanking your hand away (as opposed to gripping the wire tighter)

Books

Have I ever mentioned that the last time i was in NZ (primary 5, year 1999), I used to come back from the library with a stack of 10 books each week - and finish them?

It seems like im starting the same thing - just that now my books are on my laptop. And i don't count books by the number i read anymore... its all by file size.

Some pointless details :
eBook Folder size (.txt .lit .pdf .doc .rtf & .htm(l) files) : 135MB
of which i've read probably around 2/3 of it : so thats roughly 85MB over 4 years since I started accumulating them.

Which isn't much compared to, say, movies - one 2 hour movie is roughly 600MB.
But its a lot of text.

1000 words - roughly 20kb in a .doc file, say 10-15kb in a .txt file ...

so taking 15kb per 1000 words,
85000/15 * 1000= 5666,667 words or 5.7 million words in 4 years.

What's worrying, of course, is that I can remember finishing at least 8 books over the last 2 weeks.

AND its mid-semester exams season. (now's the time to headdesk)

*the rough calculations thing i think i blame Mr Robert Heinlein and his somewhat annoying habit of penning figures into his fiction stories

On another note, I think I like it here.

I suppose you could draw the following conclusion -  I'm perhaps overdoin the multitasking thing.

Ah well. Its quite rare to have this many ppl on the same time as me. NZ has a time zone kinda far from anyone else.

This Week

2 things : A levels result, and my birthday.

I'm 20.
6As 1B(pw) for A levels.

Nostalgia

who would've thought nostalgia can be triggered by a song? heck, i almost cried. oh, and its a church song at that...

but i suppose its not that surprising to hear this particular song here as well. sitiawan wesley ppl : its "heart of worship"

granted, tempo was different and such but its still the same song. (and its now stuck in my head. *headdesk*)

only thing was i was half expecting jolynn to be next to me, alvin on the mike, ash on the drums, chee eng fiddling with the sound system, joshua annoyingly trying to convince me to sit in front, ms sam on the other side of me, tze giving candy ...

And i was only in Sitiawan for two years.

DAngit. How is it possible to feel homesick for 3 different places simulaneously? In varying degrees, but there nonetheless.

Airport and Airlines

Kuching(KCH). Kuala Lumpur(KLIA/LCCT). Gold Coast(OOL). Sydney(SYD). Christchurch(CHC). Dunedin(DUD).

Airports and airplanes, transfers and transits, getting lost and (almost) losing things. Yep, its interesting - 5 flights, 6 airports.

KCH - KL
MAS has officially turned into a budget-ish airline. THEY STOPPED SERVING HOT MEALS. Instead you get this sandwich-box, with the packaging looking like it cost more than the contents. I'm quite happy though, cuz I asked for (and got) a 2nd sandwich pack.

KL(LCCT) has a McDs.

KL(LCCT) 2140 - OOL 0740
If you must do this, try to get a flight where you can catch some sleep. Or at least make conversation with the guy next to you. Cuz there is no in-flight entertainment. At All. Not even piped music. Oh, and when you order a hot meal, it comes with one 500ml bottle of spritzer. Which isn't enough to last the whole flight. The 2nd bottle cost RM5.
Im starting to think that the X in AirAsiaX stands for -
X food
X free water
X baggage allowance
X in-flight entertainment ... and worse,
X sleep (they don't dim the cabin lights)

Total Spent:
Additional cost to when booking ticket
RM20 - Meal
RM20 - 15kg luggage
RM20 - Advance Seat Booking -
Paid in Airport and in Airplane
RM75 - Overweight Baggage (3kg x RM25)
RM 5 - Mineral water
----
RM140

OOL Airport
Small place, no large fast food chain, hence no cheap(ish) food. But, but, you can actually check in like, 4 hours before your next flight. wow. In the end i checked in at about 1120 for the 1345 flight - needed to repack my baggage since my handcarry was 13kg. *blink* So. Checked in slightly more than 26kg  (escaped overweight fee), through to Christchurch.
Good luck stayed - our flight didn't get cancelled (the plane directly before ours got diverted cuz could not land due to bad weather), even though our plane had to spend 30 minutes or so trying to land. End result, flight delay.

Total Spent
AUS$9.50 - Meal (comes with "free" newspaper that someone left behind)
-AUS$0.60 - 20 cents back for returning a trolley, I returned 3. heh.
--------------
AUS$8.90

OOL 1415(delayed) - SYD 1640(delayed)
Can't remember much, spent my time playing Soduku (printed in the newspaper). Budget airline, so again, no food.

SYD Airport
T2 is great. Seriously. Buy your meal there - there's this large food area with McDs, Subway, etc. Then, and only then, leave (getting lost at this point is optional), go to the baggage area, look helpless at the Airline staff and get a coupon for a free bus trip to T1. Unless you'd rather pay AUS$5.
No, you cannot walk to T1 from T2. Trust me.
T1 ... T1 ... Has shower facilities, hot water included. woot. And it *is* possible to dry yourself with tissue paper.

Total Spent
AUS$6.25 - Medium Big Mac Meal

SYD 1940 - CHC 0010(early)
Fun mainly because the cabin crew guy was cracking jokes during his in-flight announcement ("If you are one of those who cannot switch off your handphone, get assistance from the nearest child"). Plus, I managed to get some sleep.

CHC Airport
There's about 20 ppl here all trying (with various degrees of success) to get some sleep, on the nice thick carpeted floor, before the domestic flights start in the morning. Me? My body clock's still on Malaysia time. Can't sleep - so check in early (for some reason after i messed up my packing - took out a few items and threw them all back in - my check in weight shrunk from 26+ to 23.5, so no need pay, again) and spend time reading Terry Pratchett off the comp screen, and writing this. Every airport so far has plug points handy for laptops and handphone charging.

CHC(0700)-DUD(0800)
The plane has propellers! mmmph. other than that... nothing interesting. slept a little.

DUD Airport
Small and far from city. never saw much cuz my bro was right there waiting for me.

Holidays...?

And lets calculate my (average) internet data transfer rate : i.e. speed.

From the connection stats...
Connected to network for 1 hour 55 minutes
Bytes downloaded : 8897467

Number of seconds online : 3500 + (55*60) = 6800
Hence, number of bytes per second = 1 308.45103

thats just over 1kbps. no wonder ive been having trouble.

Asides from that (its much much better having slow internet than no internet), ive basically been ... doing errands ... this holidays.

Not that im complaining (not much anyhow) but it get kinda boring.
Bank. Tax department. Pension office. Shopping. Cook. Visit mum's friends house. Repeat.

I still prefer my old holiday routine : Eat. Sleep. Watch T.V. (Watch T.v. was eventually replaced by Go Online). In form 1? form 2? I remember following endless episodes of ... Pokemon. I think it eventually led to one season. (yes, one season of pokemon, following scheduled television programs - not downloaded anime)

And talking about that ... I have lots and lots of episodes of House M.D. and Grey's Anatomy to watch sitting on my laptop. Now if only i have the time to view them (and preferbably not 7 days before exams - thats when i completed Full Metal Alchemist. Fun times.)

For those with more time (and some money) to spend (and hopefully a faster internet connection than mine), visit Michelle's blog at duchessofrave.blogspot.com

mmm... WHO ELSE IS LEFT IN KUCHING THAT I HAVENT MET?

for the records, these are the ppl ive met up with

1. Daphne (and various other random Aus uni ppl whom i unfortunately dont know very well)
2. Xu Vin
3. Michelle Liew
4. Audrey Teo
5. Galvin
6. Grace

... and thats basically about it.

darn.

I really need to get out more.
